Puffin Colourin’

PuffinColouring_photoThis year to kick off Puffin Festival 2016 the Scottish Seabird Centre is running a Schools Colouring Competition.

The Scottish Seabird Centre asked me to create a puffin illustration to be coloured in, which you can see above. I will also be judging the competition which has an amazing prize for the winning pupil. He/She will officially open Puffin Fest on Friday 20 May at 13:30. The winner will also receive free tickets for Puffin Fest and a trip on board the Puffin Express.

I’m looking forward to attending the 10 day festival in North Berwick which runs from 20th to 30th May, and running two sketching workshops in which you can learn some speed sketching skills in the beautiful harbour town. Book your ticket HERE. See the full programme of puffin-tastic events on during the ten days HERE.

So mention the competition to your school, and get colouring in – you can download the drawing and find out more details about the Scottish Seabird Centre’s Puffin Fest colouring competition HERE.

A day at the Edinburgh International Science Festival

ScienceFestival_2016jpgI spent the day at the City Art Centre, home to the Edinburgh International Science Festival until April 10th.

With an aim to ‘inspire people of all ages and backgrounds to discover the world around them’ the two-week festival gives audiences amazing experiences through a diverse programme of innovative events. Although the festival is spread out around the capital, the City Art Centre remains the flagship family venue and boasts six floors of fun experiments and workshops to keep the whole family entertained.

I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to return next week with the Sketcher Twins. Highlights include creating slime to be splatted against a huge target, and the Photolab where youngsters can create their own image on photographic paper in a darkroom.

Each floor is cleverly split into workshops appealing to different ages, so there is something for all the family on each level. Take a packed lunch, there is a room on the top floor for you to eat it and remember to check the website below where you can book some of the workshops before you arrive.

My sketch today was drawn as I walked around the event in black ink pen and watercolour. Below are a few close ups of my drawing. If you would like your event sketched get in touch at contact@www.edinburghsketcher.com

Sketching workshops at Lauriston Castle

sketchers3_fromYana_webThis summer I am running a number of sketch workshops at Lauriston Castle, in partnership with Edinburgh Council

My first day of workshops took place in July and I am very glad to say, a sell out. Marketed for families just starting their summer holidays we had a good range of ages attending, and a good range of accents as many had made the event part of their holiday in Edinburgh.

You may of seen some of the images below on my social media at the time but for those who didn’t the blue door selection was one of our subjects. I like to have a whole class focus in on a detail, such as the blue door and then see all the work together. It shows the range of styles and how each one has merits and personality.

My next day of classes is tomorrow, Saturday 15th August and although the morning session is sold out, at the time of writing there was still a few places in the afternoon. The session runs from  1-3pm and costs £20. Tickets can be booked via the Usher Hall website HERE

Below are a few more photographs from the first event. Thanks to Yana from The Green Deer company who came along on the tour and supplied the images with myself in them!

EXCITING NEW PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCED TODAY!

We are really excited to announce that we will be working with the Edinburgh Sketcher (aka Mark Kirkham) over the next few months on a variety of projects. The first is detailed below:

Sketching Workshop for Families: Sunday 26th July 10.30-12.30

This is a fantastic opportunity to join us with the Edinburgh Sketcher for 2 hours of sketching bliss.

We’ll go outside into the quarry/canal and forage for items to draw. Mark will then show you how to do some close sketching, distance sketching combining short timed sketches with longer studies. You’ll discuss your sketches before mounting your favourite sketch.

This 2 hour workshop is aimed at Families: Adults £20, children (age 5+) £6 with an accompanying adult, who is also sketching.

You will learn speed sketching skills and techniques to be able to capture the world around you in ink and watercolour

A sketching workshop in nature

HoneyPotCeramics_outsideI am pleased to announce I will be running a one day sketching workshop in partnership the Honey Pot Arts and Crafts on Sunday July 26th.

Based in Ratho at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena, the Honey Pot studio is huge, full of arts and crafts and with double doors to a secluded garden (within a disused quarry!), means this workshop will be able to include both outdoor and indoor sketching . The above sketch is from the garden, showing the impressive quarry rock faces that surround the EICA.

So join me for 2 hours of sketching , lose yourself in a world of crosshatching and watercolour. We will forage items to draw from the garden and create beautiful compositions. Through short timed sketches and fun activities you will relax into your art and discover a natural ability to record what you see in just a few strokes.

We’ll discuss and compare the artwork before mounting our favourites to take home.

This 2 hour workshop is aimed at Families: Adults £20, children (age 5+) £6 with an accompanying paying adult, who is also sketching. To book your place call Honey Pot Arts and Crafts on 0131 3336348
