Wellington, looking over Princes Street and The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh

WellingtonStatueI’m always keen to sketch a new angle, and this one of the Duke of Wellington statue on Princes Street is from outside the General Registers House.

This memorial to the Duke of Wellington, and his beloved horse ‘Copenhagen’ was erected in 1852. It stands outside the Registers House in Edinburgh, at the corner of Princes Street and North Bridge.

Cast in bronze from a sculpture by John Steell, the monument was dubbed ‘the Iron Duke in bronze by Steell’ by the press at the time of it’s unveiling. John Steel scultped many of Edinburgh’s statues, including the statue of Sir Walter Scott sitting with his dog Maida under the Scott Monument.

My sketch is in black ink with a watercolour wash on the Balmoral Hotel in the background.

Sketching reflections

WaverleyGateWindowReflections of The National Records of Scotland offices in the windows of Waverley Gate, at the east end of Princes Street.

Today I had a whole heap of meetings spaced throughout the day, all located around North Bridge and Waterloo Place. Whilst walking from one to another I noticed a clock tower of the National Records office (behind the Wellington statue) reflected in the windows of the building opposite.

Here is my sketch, in pen using a Uni pin fine line 0.5 point.

Seaside Exhibition at The Haven Cafe

HavenWallThis week I have been putting up a new exhibition at The Haven Cafe in Newhaven, Edinburgh.

Famed for their legendary breakfasts and home baking the Havenettes are very welcoming and run a relaxed and homely cafe between Leith and Granton Harbour.

My wall is on the right as you enter the light and airy eatery, so find them out if you havent already. Enjoy a scrummy breakfast or delightful coffee and cake , whilst looking at my high quality prints. They are priced from £25 to £49 and available to take straight away.

Tea for two in the National Library of Scotland

teapot_NLS_wsToday I had a meeting at the National Library of Scotland and fell in love with this teapot, so much so I had to sketch it.

The recently refurbished National Library of Scotland has a large and very welcoming cafe with cakes, pastries and sandwiches as well as rolling news via the BBC world service channel.

Of course they also have thousands of books creating a major European research library, with collections of world-class importance. I will have to go back and explore that further when I have a little more time. As well as in the George IV Bridge building the library has a huge amount of digital resources online, see the link below to explore further.

Glorious sunshine on the Surgeons Hall, Edinburgh

SurgeonsHallThe edge of the stunning Surgeon’s Hall on Nicolson Street. Just opposite the Festival Theatre, which was where I sketched this image.

What a beautiful day in the capital. I hope you all got chance to soak up some vitamin D today. I noticed this narrow vision of the Surgeon’s Hall columns through two posters in the Festival Theatre cafe.

I couldn’t leave until I had caught the image in my pad, firstly with a fine liner pen and then a little watercolour on top. Thanks to the Th’eatery staff for not rushing me out and letting me stretch out my pot of tea 🙂
