Watercolour lunch break

I got the watercolours out yesterday for a little lunchtime sketching. It’s great to use the paints outside, quite nervy though, you think everyone is watching!

I was looking for crocus’s, I had heard they were out but there are none to be found near Holyrood Palace. So instead this sketch and watercolour of the Radical Road, one of the routes up Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park.

The crocus’s will have to wait.

A little colour..

This morning I added a little colour to last nights sketch of the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh. I think the colour really brings the image to life, here is yesterdays original sketch for you to see. Let me know what you think below.

It was a slight rush job yesterday as I was waiting to go and see show ‘Funny Peculiar’. The rain started as I sat opposite the theatre outside the Surgeons Hall, which I will have to revisit at some point. It looks a great place to sketch.

If you are wondering the show wasn’t that great, despite having a number of well known small screen names the humour was old fashioned and actually quite often missed the mark. The comments I heard most as we left the auditorium were, ”Well, that was odd.’ and, ‘It got better…’

Never mind it’s always a pleasure to visit the grand and impressive Festival Theatre.

@the theatre

At the Festival Theatre @FCTTedinburgh tonight to see ‘Funny Peculiar’. A rare night out thanks to a couple of tickets from ShowFilmFirst.
I’m waiting on my wife so had a little time to sketch the building outside, it did start to rain though as you can tell.
Just in my black pen I think it could do with a little watercolour to distinguish the glass building from the sandstone either side. A very impressive building mind, which looks its best I think at night, all lit up.

Let’s hope the show lives up to its surroundings!

Unusual viewpoint

I passed through St James Shopping Centre today, just window shopping but it’s a good place to do so when its a bit nippy out. Me and the twins were just warming up and went up to the food level and got a coffee.

This is the view over the banister and down onto the main walkway, not a view I remember seeing before which is possibly why it jumped out to me as a good one to sketch.

I love views like this (bear with me!) All the different angles and lines coming together which when drawn give great perspective. It reminds me a little of this one from the Scottish Parliament, one of my favourites from the gallery.

See here for more info on the centre.

WhereArtI?#011

Okay Edinburgh fans, you know the rules by now – Have a look at the sketch above and tell me where I sat to sketch it.

A tough one I think you’ll find, so be sure to check in at the ES facebook page for clues. I have a feeling you’ll need them this time!

Include hashtag #wherearti with your answers either below, on facebook or twitter.

Answers to come by the end of the day, and although for now the quiz is just for fun, the first three correct answers will get a mention plus a link from my site if you make it onto the wherearti? leaderboard. Remember to forward this on, the more who play the better. Good luck :)
