Last night I was idly sketching the corner of the room while watching the latest series of Portrait Artist of the Year on Sky Arts. I love the landscape and portrait versions, just watching people make art and especially how different the art can be made from the same view or subject. I find it fascinating and inspiring.
The light on the table and wall above caught my eye so I wanted to sketch it using watercolours and just a light pencil drawing to lay out the objects before adding numerous washes of watercolour working light to dark. The bulb is the only part not to have a wash.
Making random sketches of my life is something I do for practice but also I love to look back on them and remember the everyday stuff that life is made up of. Like a visual diary it is great to flick through my old sketch books and see the kids growing up, our old pussy cat and holidays now distant in the memory.
I have a new workshop starting this November with Arienas Collective where I will be sharing my process of journal sketching. Making small doddle sketches and putting them together on a page with notes to celebrate the everyday life. Everyone will start a sketch book which they can take away to continue at home. I can’t wait to get started and you can read more about this on the Arienas website below.
