Time I sketched this Morningside landmark

This is the Morningside Clock which now sits at the bottom of the road heading South out of the city.

I often drive past this clock heading south and when I pass it on the way back I know I am home.

The clock stands outside the now unused Morningside Railway Station, which opened in 1884 and closed to passengers in 1962. Originally on an island in the middle of the junction the clock was moved to the side of the road a few years ago.

This sketch was drawn from a photo I took recently, and drawn in ink and watercolour wash.

Double strength lattes

latte on wood sketch

I am trying to give up sweet treats during the day but seem to of replaced them with extra shot lattes!

This delicious coffee was made for me at Summerhall, the fantastic creative hub in the South of the city. Home to theatre, concerts, talks, workshops & more, there’s always something on and I love just soaking up the atmosphere there.

It’s like being back at art college.

I was there to pick up some prints from the in house printer, GicleeUK and also meet Mrs Sketcher for a bite to eat in the cafe.

No sweet treats though, just plenty of caffine!

Merry Christmas from our family tree

A sight that warms my heart, our heavy laden Christmas tree, full of colour and memories.

At this time of year there is nothing better then relaxing with family at home, playing games, building Lego sculptures and watching feel good movies.

And of course a wee bit of time to myself to draw the Christmas tree!

Have a lovely festive time everyone 🙂

Sunshine on the Meadows

I met a client at Summerhall the other day and had to walk through this gorgeous park at its best, full of colour just now.

This watercolour was drawn whilst leaning against a tree in the Meadows park, on the South side of Edinburgh and just over the road from Edinburgh’s Childrens Hospital.

The sun was still just peeking over the rooftops behind me and shining through the thick trees causing great dark and light streaks across the playing fields.

The many paths that run across the park can be seen with each layer of colour. I didn’t capture the colour I wanted but will have to return and try again soon. Before the colour has fallen to the ground.

I see this rocket shaped building rising from the trees each week when taking my boy to his music lesson, but can you name the street I am travelling along.

Well done Cheryl Carroll, who won September’s prize of a Leith tea towel. The prize for November is canvas tote featuring my Edinburgh Castle sketch. These tough shoulder bags are no longer available to buy in the shops and are very sought after items!

African Woman and Child, an Edinburgh sculpture

This beautiful and emotive bronze sculpture by Anne Davidson stands in the south east corner of Festival Square.

Scottish sculptor, artist and teacher Anne Davidson (1937 – 2008) was commissioned by Edinburgh City Council to create a piece to symbolise the city’s stand against apartheid.

The sculpture depicts a woman standing with a young child in front of the suggestion of a shantytown. It was unveiled in 1986 and stands by the edge of Festival Square on Lothian Road.

Anne studied and taught at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen and her commissioned works are on public view in Scotland and abroad.

Its always been one of my favourite sculptures in the city, and is very moving to see. Perhaps because it is a recent subject compared with many in Edinburgh and one that depicts a struggle that surely goes on today.

I have been meaning to sketch it for some time so it was nice to capture it in watercolour for my WhereArtI competition.
