WhereartI Quiz – 22nd NoveMber

A view from under the bridge, but can you tell me which bridge?

Can you tell me where in Edinburgh I have sketched?

Leave your answer as a comment below, your comment will not show up until I reveal the answer tomorrow morning. Get your answer in before midnight tonight and I will pick a random winner from all correct entries by this time tomorrow.

This week’s prize is a screen printed tea towel featuring my illustration of Victoria Street.

Keep an eye on my facebook and twitter feeds for clues if they are needed later today, and remember you can also see my weekly competition in the printed version of the Edinburgh Evening News each Monday.

Stunning View from the Belford Bridge

The Water of Leith flowing into Dean Village, such a peaceful view from the Belford Bridge in Edinburgh.

This ink and watercolour drawing was originally drawn A2 size (roughly 40x60cm) and so I managed to get great detail into the trees that line the river as it meanders its way through this scene.

I love how the ivy and other plants climb up the wall and over into the gardens of these Dean Village houses. Such a calming view from the bridge and a great place to play pooh sticks 🙂

This sketch was drawn large for a client but prints are now available from my Etsy shop in two sizes – 150x100mm for £20 and 297x210mm for £34. Buy them HERE.

Visit the King’s Wark for a night in

My latest #supportabusinesssketch is for The King’s Wark. These drawings in pencil and watercolour are to say thank you for keeping us all going during the pandemic 😊👍

The Sketcher family recently ordered a seafood platter from this 15th Century Leith pub and restaurant to enjoy at home. We dressed up as if going out and had a lovely night in sharing our wonderful meal. I hope we can all visit in person soon.

Visit the King’s Walk website and ask about their famous takeaway platters. We thoroughly recommend them!!

A peaceful wander around Inverleith Park

Inverleith Park in the North of the city has been a favourite walk of mine for many a year, and the pond at the bottom a great place to sit and watch the city.

Not far from my home sits this park which I have jogged and cycled and walked around so many times. My children learnt to ride their bikes here, and before that my wife and I would push their buggy to the coffee van.

It’s a slight divertion well worth taking on the way into town, and it has many great views. The disney palace, the city skyline and this one of peace and calm across the pond.

These sketches are available as both prints and merchandise and also in some cases as original artwork. If you can’t find a particular item in my shop then you can contact me at contact@scotlandsketcher.com

Early morning walk along the Water Of Leith

This morning the kids and I decided to walk to school and afterwards I thought I’d keep on walking.

I’m lucky enough to live near the Water of Leith river that runs though the city and I joined it in St Stephens Park and headed along to Stockbridge.

This is the view from one of the walk bridges near to Canonmills and although I was caught in a shower half way through the rain stopped long enough for me to finish the sketch with watercolour.

The Car In Front

Inspired by recent crazy rainfall we have been having in Edinburgh recently this is a drawing from a photo taken yesterday in the torrential rain as I travelled through the city.

A quick sketch to warm me up before the days work. Often I like to do a speedy doodle in my sketchpad before beginning on commissions. This morning I remembered this photograph which captured the seemingly never ending rain that has been falling lately.

I love the way the droplets of water distort the view, spreading the light and changing the shapes we know so well.

Bonus WhereArtI points if you can name the street I was sitting in!

Rain falling on the windscreen in Edinburgh’s New Town

RainonHanoverAs the rain continued to fall today I sketched from my car.

Sitting looking up towards Hanover Street and Goeorge Street I watched the traffic merging with the pipples of the rain falling down my windscreen.

Shortly after sketching this I realised the rain wasn’t going to stop so made a dash for my destination. I was delivering completed commissions all around Edinburgh, Christmas presents ready to be wrapped and hopefully open once the rain has stopped and the snow has fallen!

The Dazzle Ship in Leith, Edinburgh

DazzleShip

Stunning reflections of the mesmerising Dazzle Ship by Ciara Phillips, in Leith as part of Edinburgh Art Festival 2016.

The contemporary coloured Dazzle Ship docked in Leith (near Ocean Terminal) was designed by the Turner Prize-nominated artist Ciara Phillips and will be available to see until August 28th.

Ciara Phillips’ Every Woman was co-commissioned by Edinburgh Art Festival and 14-18 NOW: WW1 Centenary Art Commissions and is actually the fourth Dazzle Shipto be commissioned after similar works in London and Liverpool which collectively commemorate the period from 2014 to 2018.

It wasn’t until I got up close to the shear size of the bold strokes of colour that I fell in love with the piece.

These unmissable floating artworks provide a visual connection to the hundreds of Dazzle Ships that crossed the seas during the First World War.

I had passed the ship by car and seen it from a distance but it wasn’t until I got up close to the shear size of the bold strokes of colour that I fell in love with the piece. Go and see it on the Prince of Wales Dock where there is also information panels telling the story of this artwork and more about the history of Dazzle Ships.

You can also get involved by creating your own ‘dazzle’ design on the Dazzle It App, follow the 14-18 Now link below to find out more.

Newhaven Lighthouse, Edinburgh

NewhavenLighthouseA symbol of hope, of solid if treacherous ground ahead, a shining light in the fog.

Some of the reasons lighthouses appeal to people, they are often a subject of choice for photographers and artists and this fine example at Newhaven harbour in Edinburgh is no exception.

Search for Newhaven Lighthouse Edinburgh in google images to see what I mean, many stunning sunsets have been captured here. I decided to visit a little earlier in the day however.

I live close by and this lighthouse and Granton Harbour are a favourite sketching area for me. I love to take a break from the city and hear the tinkle of the boats as they rock in the harbour.

Take a trip down to Leith and walk along the coast, or catch a number 11 or 16 bus from the city centre to Newhaven Harbour.

The above image was sketched on location with black fineliner and watercolour paint. Drawn on A4 watercolour paper the original is for sale for £140 and prints can be bought from £18. Contact me at contact@www.edinburghsketcher.com to buy.
