Afternoon reflections on Edinburgh windows

treerefelctions1Yesterday I was near to the Meadows park in Edinburgh’s South Side when I noticed the beautiful reflections on the tall tenement windows.

As the sun began to set over Edinburgh’s central park, the houses that run around the edge shone with a beautiful gradient of colours, with dark angular shapes showing the mighty trees hanging on to their final leaves.

Often wen sketching, knowing when to stop can be a difficult task. An over worked line drawing can look too dark, messy and leaving the white areas can be just as important as marking the dark. Adding colour can be the same, often I add watercolour to the whole image only then wishing I had left more white to show the contrast.

So on this sketch I asked social media, should I add colour to the sandstone or leave the sketch with only the window panes coloured?

If was a close thing with the ‘leave it like it is’ option winning 22 : 18.

So here it is once scanned. I like the fact the windows are highlighted by being the only part coloured in, sometimes it is good just to step back from the picture and leave it for a while. You can always come back to it later.

This sketch was drawn on location with a 0.3 fineliner and watercolours.

Autumn in the Meadows park, Edinburgh

MeadowsAutumnThere’s a wonderful show of colour currently in Edinburgh, as Autumn waves a magic wand over all our trees.

Everyone should take a walk through the beautiful colours of the Meadows park just now as October runs into November and the Edinburgh central park runs from green through bright yellows to vibrant oranges and deep dark reds.

I tried to capture a few of these colours this afternoon with my watercolours, but to be honest similarly to taking a photograph, the reproduction is a poor relation to the real thing.

Five trees at the Scottish Parliament

ScottishParliament_TreesI walk through this park outside the Scottish Parliament most days, but today the colours of these five trees stopped me in my tracks.

I have tried to capture their beauty in the strong November sunshine with a touch of watercolour, on top of a black ink sketch drawn on location. The concrete seats in the foreground and angled pond to the right make up a beautifully landscaped garden, which today was full of the worlds media waiting on the SNP’s White Paper for Scottish Independence. I was looking the other way 🙂

Beautiful blossom

BlossomwebThis sketch is of the bright and colourful blossom currently on show in front of the Canongate Kirk on the Royal Mile.

I must walk or cycle past the Kirk most days and it was great yesterday to get a little time to sketch and colour the trees outside. I’m afraid I don’t know what kind of trees they are, perhaps someone could tell me?

I’ve sketched inside the Kirk before, HERE is a link. Just before the marriage of Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall there, a couple of years ago. It’s a stunning building, inside and out.

You can find out more information about Canongate Kirk on their website HERE.

Watercolour woods

The family and I are currently on holiday, house sitting just outside Linlithgow, not far from Edinburgh.
Today we took a picnic to Beecraigs country park. There’s a huge sand pit and lots of climbing frames for the kids to play in after their sandwiches and strawberries.
This watercolour was drawn by the talented Mrs Sketcher while the children had an after lunch nap. We’ll have to go back as we didn’t have time to visit the deer farm they have at the park.

Morning moon

It was still darkish, or just getting light 😉 when I left the house to catch the bus into town this morning.

As I reached the stop I noticed the moon, just a slither of a crescent shining through the trees in front of the houses opposite. So out came the pen and paper. The sketch to the left is my second attempt, which I drew from memory on the bus. The first is below, I decided to start again as the moon was getting a little lost.

I thought it would be interesting to see my roughs though too!
