Sketching Stafford Street in stages.

StaffordStPHOTO_1Yesterday I drew a scene from Edinburgh’s West End, and posted photographs online as the drawing took shape.

Standing on the corner of Stafford and Melville Street, looking towards Shandwick Place I noticed the architectural angles directing me along the Edinburgh street. In a rush I took a photo to sketch from later.

Here are the four stages of my illustration which shows some of the process as I sketch. Although I often don’t draw in pencil if out and about, favouring the speed of using the pen straight away.

Christmas trees out in the rain

ChristmasTrees in streetWhat a difference a few days makes at Christmas!

Once a cherished member of the festive family, centre point of the living room and decorated in twinkly baubles. Now piled on top of each other, leaning against rubbish bins in the gutter.

The life of a Christmas tree, in pencil. Sketched thankfully before the current rain and terrible weather started in Edinburgh.

Bright lights in the dark sky as Edinburgh’s Christmas entertains

EdinburghsChristmas
It’s that time of year when it’s dark going to work and dark coming home, that is unless you work in the centre of Edinburgh where the city’s Christmas lights brighten up the sky.

I’m sure many of you pass by this sign a couple of times a day, it is above the Jenners end entrance to St Andrews Square, currently unrecognisable as it is in full Festive mode. Inside you will find fair ground rides shows and market stalls for all the family, not to mention an ice rink around the Melville monument.

Definitely make time to visit if you can, and let Edinburgh’s Christmas put you in the festive mood! Also… be sure to pop in to Mimi’s Cake Cabin for some delicious treats and warming coffee.

Great King Street in Edinburgh’s New Town

GreatKingStreet This is Great King Street in Edinburgh’s stunning New Town, drawn in black ink fine liner for a client.

Edinburgh’s New Town is home to sunning Georgian architecture, straight lines and symmetry that stands in stark contrast to the Old Town and its higgledy piggledy closes and cobbled alleyways. I love the contrast, and walking around the grandeur of the New Town from George Street down in to Stockbridge and the Water of Leith is one of Edinburgh’s joys for me, and a must for any visitor.
