Beautiful blossom hangs from the branches throughout Edinburgh

TrinityBlossom_houseThe glorious sunshine in Edinburgh is highlighting the range of colours in the city’s trees. Especially appealing against the bright sandstone architecture.

Yesterday I took a walk through Trinity in the North of Edinburgh and marvelled at the heavy laden branches, stunning pinks, creams and deep reds.

It’s hard to do justice to such colours and this is one thing I am always looking to perfect, capturing the rich and bright petals.

One of Edinburgh’s most beautiful wedding venues, Mansfield Traquair

MansfieldTraquairThis sketch is of Mansfield Traquair Centre, a former Church which lies to the East end of Edinburgh’s New Town.

Now used for weddings, parties and corporate events, as well as office space, the unique venue is part of the Heritage Portfolio group of buildings. Lottery money was awarded to renovate and restore the church in the 90’s and a visit to see the remarkable murals inside is a must.

The sketch above of the exterior is available to be used on wedding stationary, email me to discuss the details if you are interested.

I have also sketched live at a wedding there also, and below are a few photographs from the resulting hard back book I produced for the bride and groom.

Celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday on board Britannia

Britannia90thSketchOn Thursday 22nd April I was asked to create this sketch of the celebrations on board the Royal Yacht Britannia, in Leith.

There was a celebratory mood on board, helped by the brass band sounds from The Musical Mariners’ Band, who played on the dock and cake an fizz for all who came aboard. The music continued on Britannia as the Welmar Baby Grand piano was expertly played in the drawing room.

The Royal Tea Deck served some of the Queen’s favourite dishes, including coroantion chicken and chocolate perfection pie!

In the evening there was a spectacular firework display which you may well of heard across Edinburgh.

The sketch below is of visitor watching The Musical Mariners’ Band from on board Britannia.

Sketching Stafford Street in stages.

StaffordStPHOTO_1Yesterday I drew a scene from Edinburgh’s West End, and posted photographs online as the drawing took shape.

Standing on the corner of Stafford and Melville Street, looking towards Shandwick Place I noticed the architectural angles directing me along the Edinburgh street. In a rush I took a photo to sketch from later.

Here are the four stages of my illustration which shows some of the process as I sketch. Although I often don’t draw in pencil if out and about, favouring the speed of using the pen straight away.

My cat and I, sitting watching the telly the other night

Moch_on_my_knee The Sketcher cat, Mocha. Not one for hogging the limelight, or even looking at you when sketching or taking a photo.

Mocha is a beautiful tortoiseshell cat, fifteen years old and on the cold nights in Edinburgh she likes to curl up on my, or Mrs Sketcher’s knee.

I love to draw her fur, beautiful colours but also random line work, a change from the ordered straight lines from buildings and architecture.

As she was on Sunday evening as we both watched Shetland together. Very tense we thought it was too.

Sketch is in blanck fine liner with a watercolour wash. If you would like your pet portrait sketched prices start at £65. Email me at contact@www.edinburghsketcher.com
