Introducing my latest stockist: Thread & Heather

ThreadandHeatherThread & Heather is a new craft showcase and haberdashery/craft supply shop in the Bruntsfield area of Edinburgh.

A tardis of a premises situated at 131 Gilmore Place, from the outside it looks tiny but head through the door and you will find a long tunnel of unusual and bespoke gifts. Keep walking to the rear of the store to find a bright room filled with craft tools and delightful details to aid your creating.

I could of spent plenty of time with the felt and fabrics, jewellery and beads, fancy papers, cutouts and sticky things making a right mess!

Feeling creative? Then pop along and buy some beautiful ingredients to make your own gift, or have look through the treasure trove of gifts made by local artists, there is something for everyone at Thread & Heather.

The sketch is in black ink with a watercolour wash.

Apple picking time in Edinburgh

Apple_PrincesStreetOne week from now, at 10am on Saturday 18th October the Edinburgh Apple store will open on Princes Street.

Situated opposite The Balmoral Hotel at the East end of Princes Street, the prestigious shop will finally open its doors after being clad in branded boarding for the past few months.

Eagerly anticipated the opening is hoped to spark a retail boom in the city centre. Expect the queuing and camping around the entrance to begin soon.

Flux: A new stockist in Leith

FluxShopToday I visited this lovely gift shop on Bernard Street, Leith and left some of my wares.

A treasure trove of present ideas and bespoke gifts Flux has a strong fan base in Edinburgh. Home to a wide range of styles and creations, the shop brings together many independent designers and makers all under one roof.

Friends have been telling me my cushions of the Shore would suit the shop well, being just around the corner from the original sketch location. From today my cushions, bags and gift cards will be on display in the shop, so do drop in, if you haven’t done so already you are in for a treat.

DigIn, a new independent community grocer

DigInI was sketching in Bruntsfield today when I recognised the DigIn logo and banner above this wee shop on the high street.

After following the people at DigIn for a while on twitter I was aware of their goal of opening a community owned independent greengrocer in Edinburgh’s Southside.

I was glad to hear they had achieved this and opened the shop on the 1st May 2014. Full of fresh locally sourced produce I’m sure they will do well and become a favourite of Edinburgh folk not just locally but throughout the city. I wish them all the best.

My sketch was drawn on location with a fast drying pen and watercolour wash.

Pinnies and Poppy Seeds on St Mary’s Street

Pinnies_ColourThis week I sketched this lovely wee shop on St Mary’s Street in Edinburgh’s Old Town.

Turn off the Royal Mile and follow your nose to this delightful wee shop selling scrumptious shortbread in wonderful flavours. By constantly experimenting with new flavours and interesting and creative ideas the wafts of lemon and fresh baking smells are worth the visit alone!

‘We want to bring the fun and excitement back to shortbread!’ says owner Jennifer. Stop by and have a look, and a sniff soon, and look out for the new EdinburghSketcher canvas bags soon to be on sale there too!

WhereArtI #0018

One of things I love about Edinburgh is the ever changing look of out high streets, the wee shops that spring up and perhaps sadly disappear all too quick. Which means whenever I travel along Leith Walk/Morningside/Stockbridge/etc I’m always noticing new shop, restaurant or cafe fronts with signs saying ‘opening soon’.
This shop is undergoing a transformation, I think from a hairdressers into a bakery or cafe. Can you tell me where it is situated?
As ever tag your answers with #wherearti and look out for clues if needed on facebook and twitter later. Good luck Edinburgers!

Wash of colour

Tonight I finished my sketch of this shop on the Royal Mile, I love the colour and interest these shops bring to the High Street. This particular one, Ness, sells a beautifully colourful range of tweed, tartan and woollen clothing for women.

I posted my initial pencil sketch earlier this week, here. Not wanting to leave the drawing as black and white due to the fact it was the colour that first caught my eye, I waited until I had a little time and then added a watercolour finish.

See below for a close up of the shop.
