On 20th October a 5 pence tax on all shopping bags came into force in Scotland. Perfect time to invest in an Edinburgh Sketcher cotton bag.
Afternoon Edinburgh, I hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine, albeit with a cold wind too. Here are my latest additions to my online shop. 100% cotton bags screen printed with two EdinburghSketcher designs.
The first is a cropped version of The Shore illustration with the title ‘Leith’, screen printed in black and blue ink. I love that the blue ink is called ‘Deacon Blue’. The other design is a cropped version of the popular Victoria Street sketch, in back and purple ink. With the simple ‘Victoria St.’ beneath.
You can now buy both UK made cotton bags from my shop for £9.50 each plus £2 pnp. They will soon be available around the capital so look out for them on the streets of Edinburgh. They fold up very small, perfect to fit into your hand bag or back pack, ensuring you won’t be caught out next time you get to the till!

Today I visited this lovely gift shop on Bernard Street, Leith and left some of my wares.
A treasure trove of present ideas and bespoke gifts Flux has a strong fan base in Edinburgh. Home to a wide range of styles and creations, the shop brings together many independent designers and makers all under one roof.
Friends have been telling me my cushions of the Shore would suit the shop well, being just around the corner from the original sketch location. From today my cushions, bags and gift cards will be on display in the shop, so do drop in, if you haven’t done so already you are in for a treat.
Yesterday I visited Leith and the three cranes that sit on Ocean Drive next to a casino.
I finally made time to sketch one of these three cranes which are home to many pigeons and seagulls. The three stand together and one day I will return to sketch all three, but for now this will do.

When asked recently if I could create a sketch down at The Shore in Leith I was very surprised to find I hadn’t done so already. This is an iconic view of the Shore, the beautiful cobbled streets and gabled ended tall houses by the harbour remind me of mainland Europe, Brugges or Amsterdam perhaps.
I was commissioned by a couple who were emigrating overseas and wanted a view of the area to remind them of home. The sketch turned out well, I was going to colour it but didn’t want to lose any of the detail or make it too dark, which can sometimes happen when I add watercolour. The couple were very pleased with the result and I wish them all the best with their move. I like the idea of my sketch hanging in another country, reminding them of Edinburgh.

Happy birthday to Leith Library, celebrating 80 years of being open to the public. On 20th July 1932 the Leith Library and New Town Hall was officially opened.
Today the library is celebrating by holding a number of events so head along and support your library today.
From 1pm today, Friday 20th July: The library is transported back to the 1930s with music and stories from the grand opening; craft events for children; photographs ranging from the libraries 80 year history; plus a facinating display of library artifacts and documents.
