August workshop sketching

This week I have had a couple of workshops with Arienas Collective in the New Town.

It is great welcoming visitors to the city and on Sunday I was introducing a sketcher from New Mexico to Circus Lane, their first time seeing this iconic Edinburgh street.

I just love the curve of the cobbles as the pretty houses turn away into the distance. It is the perfect place to end my perspectives workshop.

It was a beautifully sunny day on Sunday, I do admit were a little creative with the sky for this one though 😉

The John Muir Grove

A beautiful circle of Redwoods rising like columns into the tree canopy, this quiet part of the RBGE is wonderful.

Often used as a place to be married and I can see why, the magnificent redwoods create quite a cathedral of nature as you stand beneath them, just off the path through the Royal Botanical Gardens Edinburgh.

I am lucky to live close by and the ever changing gardens are a favourite place for me to come and draw, surrounded by nature but within the heart of the city.

A birthday sketch for the Baird

Robert Burns ink sketch

Today’s sketch had to be a portrait of Robert Burns, drawn using ink and a fountain pen

I do have a hundred other things to get on with but I thought I would take a moment out of commissions this morning to make this ink sketch using my fountain pen.

I love using the smooth nib of a fountain pen, although my hands often end up covered in ink.

I also made a small video so was practicing holding the camera and drawing at the same time, but it turned out okay. I was inspired by a couple of videos online to use real time snippets of the drawing rather than a speeded up time lapse as I have in the past.

I think the chopped up real time video shows more of the truthful process, but what do you think?

Winters Sun over Arthurs Seat

Sun over Arthurs Seat from Newhaven Road, Edinburgh

I do love the low lying sun at this time of year, for the shiny sandstone and the long shadows, and also the silhouetted buildings which I spotted on my morning drive this week.

This view is looking across Ferry Road from Newhaven Road. Looking towards the city and Holyrood Park in the distance. I had to pull over and sketch from my warm car.

The dark buildings and trees at first merge into one but then the more you look you see the different levels into the distance. The notes of a bus stop and some car lights become visible and hopefully I have captured that feeling of hidden in plain sight.

Drawn in with an ink fine liner and then a little watercolour wash over the top.

A look up into the new shopping and hotel complex where once stood the St James Shopping Centre.

The top of Leith walk is awash with brightly coloured construction workers as the huge rebuilding of the St James shopping centre and hotel into the new St James Quarter, which is due to open later this year.

This sketch is from just by the roundabout and show the new walkway and glass entrance which will lead to the covered shopping streets within.

I remember the old shopping centre being quite dark and small, I short cut rather than a destination. From the looks of the construction so far the new ‘quarter’ will be much larger and much brighter inside.

I am determined to work in a few more random sketches into my day.

Not for commission, not for promotion, not for deadline. Just for me, as it brings so much joy and although I love drawing for a living and am so lucky to have clients wanting my work, sometimes it’s just so relaxing to just draw for fun 😊

Have a great weekend all, and here’s to a little more normal routine returning next week with the kids returning to school.

      Time I sketched this Morningside landmark

      This is the Morningside Clock which now sits at the bottom of the road heading South out of the city.

      I often drive past this clock heading south and when I pass it on the way back I know I am home.

      The clock stands outside the now unused Morningside Railway Station, which opened in 1884 and closed to passengers in 1962. Originally on an island in the middle of the junction the clock was moved to the side of the road a few years ago.

      This sketch was drawn from a photo I took recently, and drawn in ink and watercolour wash.
