Plenty to see at Edinburgh Book Festival

BookFest2014_booksI and the wee Sketchers (seen here sitting at one of the sunflower tables) were soaking up the sun in Charlotte Square yesterday afternoon. Surrounded by books, authors and illustrators I have to admit we got a little carried away in the shop.

There is so much on in Edinburgh at this time of the year I sometimes only find my way to the Book Festival on the last day and rush around in a blur trying to take it all in.

This year however I and the kids were there to soak up the atmosphere (and sunshine) and enjoy being amongst the wonderful world of words, illustrations and knowledge that is a book festival. After buying a (rather lovey) canvas bag full of books in the children’s shop we spent an hour cutting and sticking in the kids craft tent.

And with a week still to go I will definitely be back, although next time perhaps on my own… those deck chairs look great for a wee snooze in the sun.

Foodies Festival in Edinburgh 2014

FoodiesFestival2014If you are heading to Foodies Festival in Inverleith Park today you are in for a treat.

As I write this the rain has started in Edinburgh but hopefully it is just a wee shower and the sun will return for the final afternoon of this year’s Foodies Festival in Inverleith Park, in the north of Edinburgh.

I and the extended Sketcher family were there sitting in the sunshine enjoying the best of Scottish and UK produce, listening to live music and enjoying the relaxed and happy atmosphere which is always evident at the annual showcase for food and drink makers.

Here are my sketches from the day, a full table of food and empty dishes, the Edinburgh Gin tent (their raspberry flavour is very summery), the superb trestle tables which helped seat all the extra visitors this year, and a lovely bike sign for Market Deli crisps which were scrummy!

The Underbelly has landed

PurpleCow1Last night was the press launch of this years Underbelly Fringe Festival, and I was lucky enough to see a glimpse of what’s on offer.

It was great to be back under the gaze of the upturned coo, and as the transformed and unrecognisable Bristo Square filled with those eager to see what this years Fringe Festival had in store I sketched the inflatable heed :).

Compare for the evening was the very funny Felicity Ward, who did a great job introducing each act, and dealing with a rowdy crowd and kept the evening flowing superbly.

Each of nine acts (ten if you include Felicity)  had around five minutes to show off their act in a bid to make it into the watching reviewers ‘highlight of the night’.

For me that honour went to the spell binding ‘Circa: Beyond’, an amazing show of strength and agility which saw a performer suspend  from a piece of material, high from the stage.

A close second though was a hilarious double act called ‘Frisky and Mannish’ who sang out letters of advice for pop stars, possibly (or possibly not!) penned by Sinead O’Connor.

All the acts entertained and I can’t wait to see more, one thing is for sure – the Edinburgh Fringe has definitely begun! Below are a few of my sketches from the night, scribbled largely in a darkened theatre!! For more information about the acts on at the Underbelly this year see their website below.

The Summertime Big Wheel

FestivalWheelThe Festival Wheel is now up and spinning away, here is a sketch through the railings on Market Street.

I wasn’t a fan at first of the big wheel making a summertime appearance. Why make every season look the same? But I’m sure it’s nice to sit in the wee pods without being wrapped in several layers and watching your breath in front of your eyes.

Plus it was nice to sketch the wheel with the sun burning my back, rather than my fingers slowly going numb 🙂 I drew this from Market St just down from the Mound, which I guess will soon be turned into a summer fair?

The Festival Theatre, Edinburgh

FestivalTheatreCurrently celebrating it’s 20th birthday, this impressive glass building on Edinburgh’s Nicolson Street is home to wonderful performance art; opera, ballet and musicals are regularly on the bill at The Festival Theatre.

I was invited recently to watch the Nederlands Dans Theatre 2 company and it struck me how diverse the range of shows on offer were. My previous visit was to watch the lovely Snowman. Take a look at their website, link below, to see their upcoming shows.

My sketch is in black ink, with a water colour wash. A limited number of mounted prints are now for sale from my online shop HERE, along with my recent sketch of the King’s Theatre, below.

Nederlands Dans Theatre 2 at the Festival Theatre

NDT2_FestivalTheatreThis afternoon I was one of a lucky few to preview the Nederlands Dans Theatre 2, a contemporary dance company visiting the Festival Theatre in Edinburgh.

After receiving rave reviews and standing ovations across the globe the dance company bring their mix of spectacular movement and flamboyant theatre to the Festival for just two nights, their only UK appearance.

I loved the great music and completely new dance moves. If there are tickets left I thoroughly recommend seeing the show, the website link is below.

The sketch is a montage of different parts of the show, scribbled in black ink and then coloured digitally later.

Fringe appeal

FringeRoyalMile2013I got in a perfect position to sketch this performer and his captivated audience this week, on the Royal Mile. Now in the middle of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival the street is jam packed with street acts performing, fringe acts selling their shows and tourists taking it all in.

I love to find a new or different angle for my sketches and as I walked through the crowds I noticed this perfectly framed scene, I love the fringe banner above and St Giles Cathedral in the background. The Royal Mile in August isn’t just a place to watch the performers, it is also great for people watching. So here is my sketch of the audience watching a guitar player, who was excellent by the way, he must of been to have such a large crowd listening so intently.

If you are heading up in to town this morning have a great time, and smile – you may be being sketched 🙂

The Pleasance

The beer has arrived at the Pleasance, one of the main venues for festival shows in Edinburgh. I saw three lorries and a minivan full of beer today, all to keep the festival revellers partying over the next few weeks.

The Pleasance has many venues, ranging in size from 770 seats to just 50 and the central courtyard is a great place for a drink in the evening sunshine, soaking up the festival atmosphere.
