Drawing inspiration from the George Street Assembly Rooms interiors

AssemblyRooms BallroomWindowJoin me for a sketching workshop inside the iconic Edinburgh venue in it’s 230th year with this one day only experience.

Explore the timeless elegance and beauty, the enormous crystal chandeliers, gleaming gold leaf and giant gilt mirrors with a sketch book in hand, using ink and watercolour to bring your visit to life.

With helpful instruction from myself, you will quickly pick up sketching skills while increasing confidence in your own artistic ability as you tour the various rooms of this Georgian venue.

Once we have filled your pages with beautiful ink drawings, we’ll end our tour with tea or coffee and time to add watercolour to our sketches and compare our doodles around a table in this relaxed and friendly workshop.

No previous experience is required for this relaxed and informal drawing tour and all materials are provided.

If so click the link below to email me your answer. I will pick a random winner from all correct answers on Tuesday morning, and they will go on to the ‘Winners wall’. At the end of the month those on the wall will be entered into a draw to receive a prize.

The prize for February is on of my popular Edinburgh mugs, which can be bought through my Etsy shop online, HERE. Currently I have three designs featuring Edinburgh Castle, The Shore, Leith and Victoria Street. Each are made in the UK and are dishwasher safe.

Never a wasted journey in Leith, Edinburgh

leith-theatre-and-registrar-officeWhen recently at Leith Regestry Office without an appointment I had time to spare, and time to sketch.

Behind the beautiful building which houses Leith Library and Registry Office is the Leith Theatre, which is also home to the Thomas Morton Hall.

The theatre was a gift from the people of Edinburgh to the people of Leith following the decision on 10th October 1920 to incorporate the Burgh of Leith into Edinburgh.

The theatre has been closed since 1988 but the Leith Theatre Trust was established in 2004 as a community trust with an aim to return the building to a use which will add value to the Leith Community and generate business in the area. Find out more about the building at the link below.

I had to return to the registry office the next day, so if wanting a copy of your birth certificate remember to call ahead and make an appointment!

Beautiful blossom hangs from the branches throughout Edinburgh

TrinityBlossom_houseThe glorious sunshine in Edinburgh is highlighting the range of colours in the city’s trees. Especially appealing against the bright sandstone architecture.

Yesterday I took a walk through Trinity in the North of Edinburgh and marvelled at the heavy laden branches, stunning pinks, creams and deep reds.

It’s hard to do justice to such colours and this is one thing I am always looking to perfect, capturing the rich and bright petals.

Sketching Stafford Street in stages.

StaffordStPHOTO_1Yesterday I drew a scene from Edinburgh’s West End, and posted photographs online as the drawing took shape.

Standing on the corner of Stafford and Melville Street, looking towards Shandwick Place I noticed the architectural angles directing me along the Edinburgh street. In a rush I took a photo to sketch from later.

 

Here are the four stages of my illustration which shows some of the process as I sketch. Although I often don’t draw in pencil if out and about, favouring the speed of using the pen straight away.

The Usher Hall, a recent commission and now a print for sale

UsherHall_colourThis is the Usher Hall, on Lothian Road in the west end of Edinburgh. The city’s key venue for visiting national and international orchestras and the main venue for the Edinburgh International Festival.

 

The building owes its construction to whisky, as it was funded by Andrew Usher, a whisky blender who donated £100,000 to the city specifically to fund a new concert hall.

 

The building has featured in my WhereArtI competition before, I sketched the lions head above the entrance, the image is below.
