Where Art I? #007

Morning everyone, here is this weeks #wherearti quiz, can you name the sketch?

This beautiful red sandstone building is not too far from the centre of town, it maybe a tough one but this building has a busy weekend coming up. Extra points if you tell me what that is.

Good luck and remember to check in at the ES facebook page for clues though out the day.

Include hashtag #wherearti with your answers either below, on facebook or twitter. Answers and a new leaderboard this afternoon. From this week we’ll start a top table of WhereArtI? guessers!!  How well do you know Edinburgh?

Summer flyer anyone?

Would anyone like to commission artwork for a flyer this summer?

I  know Easter is yet to arrive but the Edinburgh Festival is only just around the corner, and the streets will once more be awash with promotional flyers fighting for your attention.

Thousands of shows will be on offer throughout the city and each one will have an A6 shiny piece of paper to promote their act.

So plenty of business for me then!

Here is one I mocked up today, don’t get too excited as the info isn’t real, sorry.

I can incorporate the star of the show into the city, or perhaps infront of the venue.

And all in my distinct Edinburgh Sketcher style. What could be better? 😉

Happy Friday everyone #FF

Kindy Illustration

A busy day ahead of me today so I may not get to sketch, instead I thought I’d share this commission I recently completed for a client in Australia.

This illustrated montage of photos from a kindergarten was a gift for a member of staff who was retiring.

From a number of images of the kindergarten play areas I put together the composition and the drew the illustration from that combined image. Lifting out a single colour in the kids outfits helped to add a little colour and pull out certain parts of the montage, without overpowering the whole image. The hand prints are another nice detail to link to the children at the nursery.

If you would like to commission a similar illustration, or talk over an idea you may have for a drawing then please get in touch at contact@www.edinburghsketcher.com for more details.

A Royal view

A walk through the @TheBotanics today, it was milder than I thought it would be – the cloud lying low across the city was keeping us warm. I pushed the pram to the top of the hill in the gardens and found a bench infront of Inverleith House, from which to feed the kids.

I’m looking forward to the summer when the four of us can head up there with a blanket and have a picnic. Last summer the twins couldn’t sit up, let alone crawl around.

This is the view of Edinburgh Castle from the top, through the trees and over the roof tops. It’s one of my favourite views of the castle, as the city seems so close yet in the peace of the gardens it could be so far away.

I’ve added a simple three stripe colour wash in photoshop. Let me know what you think below.

Pause for thanks

Usually just before I get on my bike in the morning,  I really can’t be bothered, when it’s cold outside then the warmth of the car or bus can seem very appealing.

But after a couple of minutes cycling, once I’ve warmed up a bit and past the crowded bus stop I feel more awake. I race along side the stationary traffic and turn into Clark Road to see the sun rising over the beautiful Edinburgh skyline and Arthur’s Seat.

So thanks to the trusty bike that wakes me up and sends me to work with a positive outlook, even if I sometimes don’t seem too eager!

A sketchy glimpse of the Castle

This is a view from my cycle to work, through two buildings to Edinburgh Castle. The image only lasts for a second or two as you pass over the bridge which spans the Water of Leith river, in St Mark’s Park.

The view is different every day thanks to the wonderful skies we get here in Scotland. Today however the sky is cloudy and dull, creating a slightly hazy skyline. I have added a closeup below.

I only used pencil today, partly because the medium lends itself well to the dull cloudy day, but also because Pencils.com from California have made Edinburgh Sketcher their ‘pencil artist of the week’. Be sure to check out their blog and site for more pencil art and a wide range of sketching materials for sale.  pencils.com  blog @pencils.com
