A Royal view

A walk through the @TheBotanics today, it was milder than I thought it would be – the cloud lying low across the city was keeping us warm. I pushed the pram to the top of the hill in the gardens and found a bench infront of Inverleith House, from which to feed the kids.

I’m looking forward to the summer when the four of us can head up there with a blanket and have a picnic. Last summer the twins couldn’t sit up, let alone crawl around.

This is the view of Edinburgh Castle from the top, through the trees and over the roof tops. It’s one of my favourite views of the castle, as the city seems so close yet in the peace of the gardens it could be so far away.

I’ve added a simple three stripe colour wash in photoshop. Let me know what you think below.

Where Art I? #006

Welcome to this weeks WereArtI? quiz, have a guess at where in Edinburgh you think my sketch is of. Many of you will of walked past this building on the way to work, perhaps without noticing the top.

Any ideas? Let me know your thoughts below, or on twitter at @edinsketcher or at facebook/edinburghsketcher  If you haven’t a clue just guess! and be sure to tag your guess with #wherearti

Keep an eye on my facebook page for clues thoughout the day.

Good luck!!

So far #WhereArtI? is just for fun, but if you have any ideas for prizes or would like to sponsor the quiz then get intouch at contact@www.edinburghsketcher.com

Pause for thanks

Usually just before I get on my bike in the morning,  I really can’t be bothered, when it’s cold outside then the warmth of the car or bus can seem very appealing.

But after a couple of minutes cycling, once I’ve warmed up a bit and past the crowded bus stop I feel more awake. I race along side the stationary traffic and turn into Clark Road to see the sun rising over the beautiful Edinburgh skyline and Arthur’s Seat.

So thanks to the trusty bike that wakes me up and sends me to work with a positive outlook, even if I sometimes don’t seem too eager!

A sketchy glimpse of the Castle

This is a view from my cycle to work, through two buildings to Edinburgh Castle. The image only lasts for a second or two as you pass over the bridge which spans the Water of Leith river, in St Mark’s Park.

The view is different every day thanks to the wonderful skies we get here in Scotland. Today however the sky is cloudy and dull, creating a slightly hazy skyline. I have added a closeup below.

I only used pencil today, partly because the medium lends itself well to the dull cloudy day, but also because Pencils.com from California have made Edinburgh Sketcher their ‘pencil artist of the week’. Be sure to check out their blog and site for more pencil art and a wide range of sketching materials for sale.  pencils.com  blog @pencils.com

Where art I? #005

Chilly courtyard

It was a bit nippy out yesterday, a strong sun shone on Edinburgh though so I hunted for a bench in the sunshine from which to sketch from. And I found one in the courtyard at the entrance to Palace of HolyroodHouse. You can see through the narrow passage over the road and onto the Scottish Parliament.

I had a quick look inside the parliament too, you can climb high to a public gallery and look down on the debating chamber. No time yesterday but a great place to sketch from.

mmm that time again..

As Christmas and the New Year seem distant memories these tempting treats start popping up in shops throughout the land.

This is a sketch I first posted almost a year ago, here but this year I thought it would make a nice Easter card or maybe would look good printed on a teatowel or canvas bag like Gillian Kyles Tunnochs Teacakes.

What do you think? I’d love your feedback on this. ES

And now for something completely different

With the afternoon away from the office I took a trip into town with the twins. They opened their first bank account, receiving a story book and money box each for doing so.

After climbing the hill from Stockbridge, and before visiting the bank we stopped at Waterstones on George Street for some refreshment. There is a Costa to the back of the shop. We all had milk, mine with added shots of espresso.

This is a pencil sketch of the twins drinking their milk in the pram. I like the scribble effect, it looks almost ghostly. Very different from yesterdays Where Art I? sketch.
